The SALGA report (Status of small scale embedded generation in South African municipalities, November 2016) is the most recent and credible source of data on the known installed solar rooftop PV capacity in various municipalities across the country.
It states that as of August 2016, a total of 38,389 kWp of solar has been installed from systems that municipalities are aware of.
The trend reported on is that the Western Cape province leads with the number of installations i.e. a total of 322 PV systems (9,787kWp); but Gauteng leads with the highest capacity from solar i.e. 24,813kWp from 77 installations.
Since the sector is progressing rapidly and not all installations are known and captured, these figures can be considered the minimum capacity that exists for the country.
